Confederate brigadier general mortally wounded while defending the famed “sunken road” behind the stone wall at Fredericksburg. A brother of Major General Howell Cobb, he formed “Cobb’s Legion,” distinguished in the Battles of Seven Days and 2nd Manassas. It was this legion who inflicted such heavy casualties on Union troops attempting to charge Marye’s Heights. ALS “<i>Thos. R. R. Cobb</i>” as attorney, 1p, 4to, Athens, GA, Nov 16, 1858. To an associate Col. R. McMillan, Cobb writes, “<i>...I have examined carefully the demurrer of your Bill & I must say I never saw so lame & impotent an attempt at delay—I am surprised that Mr. Van Duger is willing to submit his own character to such an exposition—The only suggestion I have to make is <u>to watch him</u> for we may have to seek a Receiver from the Court...</i>[Judge]<i> James Thomas writes me </i>[he]<i> has held his last court. He resigns in January...</i>” Boldly penned and signed. Expertly inlaid. An irregular 1"x1" hole in text repaired on verso obscures a couple of words; o/w VG. Extremely rare in any form. Cobb is most likely writing to <b>Robert McMillan</b> (1805-1868), a Georgia legislator, who later served as colonel of the 24th GA.</span></p>
