THOMAS L. CLINGMAN: (1812 - 1897) Confederate brigadier general who commanded a brigade at the Wilderness and fought at Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor and in the Petersburg assaults. Fine content A.D.S. "T. L. Clingman" penned at the bottom of a partly-printed War Department letter, 1p. legal folio, Washington, May 18, 1881. In the letter Clingman is asked to amend and add to biographical information included in the letter, for publication in a "Roster of the Confederate Army. He writes: "..During 1862 early part of 1863 was in Command at Wilmington N.C. During the larger portion of 1863, chiefly at Charleston S.C. Sullivans Island under command of General Beauregard. Dec. of 1863 moved to Virginia. There under Pickett first, afterwards Beauregard & Gen. Lee [&] A. P. Hill attached to Rhodes Division till surrender at Greensboro...".
