THOMAS ARNOLD (1795-1842). English educator, preacher, and classical historian; Father of Mathew Arnold. Author of History of Rome, History of the Later Roman Commonwealth and an edition of Thucydides (1835). His unpopular political and theological views prevented an appointment to Oxford until 1841. ALS, 1¼pp, 4to, Rugby, Sep 5, 1832. On letter paper to the Rev. J. G. Hewlett regarding his application to lecture at Rugby on the abolition of slavery. In part, “I lose no Time in replying to your Letter...I need not say that my Sanction to any Lectures delivered in Rugby can only be needed on two Points; one, for allowing our School Rooms to be used as the Place of Meeting; and the other for encouraging the Attendance of the boys. Now the first part of these I make it almost, and the second quite an Universal rule, not to do. My Sanction therefore...I must decline giving;—and with Regard to personal Attendance, the Time of most of my Friends s well as my own is sufficiently occupied...And to confess the Truth; the Question of the Extinction of Slavery in our colonies is one of such great Difficulty and Delicacy...that I would far rather trust the Matter in the Hands of the present Government whose liberal Dispositions none can doubt...” Addressed on integral leaf in his holograph. VG. Neatly inlaid. Accompanied by lithograph portrait.
