THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Announcing a meeting that would result in the formation of the National Conservation Commission, Roosevelt declares: "There is urgent need of taking stock of our resources…"

(1858-1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. T.L.S. as President on White House letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Mar. 14, 1908 to Joseph D. Bryant, President of the American Medical Association, inviting Bryant and the AMA to participate in a forthcoming conference on the Conservation of Natural Resources, an important issue for Roosevelt. In part: "...Recently I invited the Governors of the States and Territories to meet in the White House on May 13-15 next in a conference on the Conservation of Natural Resources. In issuing the invitation, I expressed the opinion that there is urgent need of taking stock of our resources, and added my belief that the conference ought to rank among the more important meetings in the history of the country...practically all of the Governors...will attend the conference...Justices of the Supreme Court, and the members of the Cabinet have also been invited to take part...". A fold, some soiling and two pencil marks, else very good. The meeting, held in Reno, Nevada, was a landmark event. The conference recommended creation of a National Conservation Commission, of which Gifford Pinchot was named chairman. In 1909 the Commission submitted to Roosevelt a systematic study of the nation’s mineral, water, forest, and soil resources, the first such overview in American history. Sold with a typed draft reply by Bryant, 3pp. 4to., New York, May 18, 1908. Bryant cites the need for maintenance of potable water supplies and maintenance of sanitary conditions, and congratulates Roosevelt on his efforts to support: "constructive principle over destructive policy".

Estimate: $2,000 - 3,000.
