A military commission for the nephew of Civil War hero Major Gen. John F. Reynolds

THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. Partly-printed D.S. "Theodore Roosevelt" as President, 1p. folio, Washington, July 6, 1906, the appointment of JOHN F. REYNOLDS LANDIS to serve as Major of Cavalry, co-signed by Secretary of War and future president WILLIAM H. TAFT. Roosevelt's signature is just a tad light, Taft's is very bold. No folds, and just a few light creases and light soiling. John F. Reynolds Landis (1856-1939) was the nephew of Civil War Major Gen. John F. Reynolds who was once offered the command of the Union Army and tragically killed leading his men on the first day's battle at Gettysburg. Landis achieved the rank of colonel and is buried at Arlington.
