THEODORE ROOSEVELT: (1858 - 1919) Twenty-sixth President of the United States who started the Panama Canal, settled the Russo-Japanese War, broke up Standard Oil and encouraged conservation. Rare and fine content A.L.S. "T. Roosevelt" as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 25, 1909 to Post Master General, George von L. Meyer concerning the disciplining of a postal inspector. He writes in full: "To the P.M.G. In this case of postmaster Whilt, why should we not take action against the inspector who, as it now appears falsely, recommended Whilt for removal for dishonesty? His action rendered injustice unacceptable either to Whilt or [illeg.]" From 1889 to 1895 Roosevelt served on the U.S. Civil Service commission which included brining more postal workers under civil service classification and thus free of patronage. During his presidency he continued his commitment to civil service reform, in particular, the post office. In his 1904 State of the Union address he noted: "...through frauds, forgeries, and perjuries, and by shameless briberies--the laws relating to the proper conduct of the public service in general and to the due administration of the Post-Office Department have been notoriously violated, and many indictments have been found, and the consequent prosecutions are in course of hearing or on the eve thereof. For the reasons thus indicated, and so that the Government may be prepared to enforce promptly and with the greatest effect the due penalties for such violations of law, and to this end may be furnished with sufficient instrumentalities and competent legal assistance for the investigations and trials which will be necessary at many different points of the country, I urge upon the Congress the necessity of making the said appropriation available for immediate use for all such purposes, to be expended under the direction of the Attorney-General..." The letter was cut at one point and the two pages bearing his hand have been pasted together along one margin so they appear side by side for framing, usual folds, trimmed at top, otherwise very good condition. $3,000-5,000
