THEODORE HERZL: (1860 - 1904) Hungarian Jew, founder of modern Zionism. Sent to Paris as a correspondent, he reported on the Dreyfus affair and was soon appalled by the vicious anti-Semitism he observed. Herzl decided that Jewish assimilation in Europe was impossible and that the only solution to the Jewish problem was the establishment of a Jewish national state, and organized the first Zionist World Congress, serving as its president. Rare printed form letter signed "Herzl", 1p. 4to., Vienna, Aug. 10, 1902 in German announcing the agenda of an upcoming Zionist meeting. In part: "...Esteemed Colleague!...we have already invited you to the meeting of the A.C. at large to be held on Tuesday, October 28, 1902. The agenda is as follows: 1. Report of the A.C. Chairman regarding the political situation as well as discussion and passing of resolutions to further actions. 2. Report and passing of resolutions about the agenda of the annual conference..."
