THEODORE HERZL: (1860 - 1904) Hungarian Jew, founder of modern Zionism. Sent to Paris as a correspondent, he reported on the Dreyfus affair and was soon appalled by the vicious anti-Semitism he observed. Herzl decided that Jewish assimilation in Europe was impossible and that the only solution to the Jewish problem was the establishment of a Jewish national state, and organized the first Zionist World Congress, serving as its president. Rare T.L.S. "Herzl", 2pp. 4to., Vienna, Feb. 22, 1902 headed "STRICTLY CONFIDENTAIL!", in German to "Dear Esteemed Colleague". In part: "...Dr. Herzl has accepted an invitation from the Sultan [of Constantinople], and was the Sultan's guest during his visit. The negotiations could not reach a final result because the offers made by the Turkish side did not entirely fit our program. Under such circumstances Dr. Herzl felt unable to accept. In the meantime, the relations remained splendid and the negotiations will be continued...we remind you you are duty-bound and authorize you to communicate only the following, if required: [Bottom of this page has been excised; continues on page 2]...Nobody should feel insulted, because it is evenly targeted at everybody, and in brotherly mind. But we need to add that should an indiscretion be committed by a member of the grand A[ction]. C[ommittee]. at this or any other occasion, we will communicate that person's name in a circular...and in the future will not send circulars to the same person. With Zionist greetings...". Excision as noted above, staple hole in blank upper-left corner, else very good. $1,500-2,000
