THE WRECK OF THE STEAMSHIP VICTOR
Interesting manuscript D.S. 2pp. oblong 8vo., New York, Dec. 1866, regarding the passage of the steamship Victor which wrecked shortly after this document was penned. It reads: "Rec'd in New Orleans Dec. 17, 1866 [?] from the Merchants Mutual Ins Co fifteen hundred hundred [sic] and twelve dollars and seventy four cents being proportion of General ? charged in case of StShip Victoria on her passage from New York in Oct. 1865...". On verso is a docket titled "Memo" with a list of payees regarding the case. The Victor set sail in October of 1865 from New York bound for New Orleans with a load of merchandise belonging to John Bratt of Staffordshire, England. It wrecked in the Gulf of Mexico under truly terrifying conditions. Bratt describes the horrifying scene in his memoir "Trails of Yesterday" (excerpt included). The Victor was eventually rescued by the merchant ship Alabama transporting cotton from New Orleans to New York, and Bratt remained there having lost everything. Having survived the ordeal but penniless and unemployed, Bratt repaired to New Orleans and eked out a living on the levee in Morganzie. He eventually settled in Nebraska. Light showthrough from verso, otherwise very good condition, worthy of further research.

Estimate: $100 - 150.
