(THE SIDESHOW: WHITE NEGRO )
"An interesting A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., Homer, May 9, 1842 concerning the sideshow curiosity who was known as ""The White Negro"". In part: ""àI crossed the Susquehanna at Great Bend and reached Binghamton at about 7 o'clock. Finding that the show of the 'White Negro' was still in operation curiosity prompted me to look in and see the animal. It was indeed a curiosity - there he was - a full blooded negro boy to all intents and purposes except that the fleece which covered his head was as white although I doubt whether it was as fine as that of a Merino sheep. His eye brows and lashes where also perfectly white as was also his skin. There were some things exceptional about him but take him as a whole. I fear that I shall 'never look upon his like again'à"". A rare an unusual reference to a black sideshow attraction seldom encountered in 19th century writings. Very good." 2433 An interesting A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., Homer, May 9, 1842 concerning the sideshow curiosity who was known as ""The White Negro"".
