642. THE SEXUAL PROWESS OF UNION SOLDIERS IN VIRGINIA A rather unusual war-date letter written by Union Private John F. Turner, Co. F, 10th Maine Vols., 6pp. varying size, Berlin, Md., Nov. 17, 1862, to his brother concerning the sexual prowess of Union soldiers and of lost hopes in Cuba, in part: "...I have been over in Va., Lovetsville, since the last time I wrote...you can guess how Secessh chickens, squall and how sweet the bees make their honey. Well, I didn't do any mischief amongst them but some of our boys cant rest one night without storming some hen-roost or beehive (sesesshy has to bear it)...to a foolish dream I had some time ago...nearly all my dreams for the last three years have come true...while in New York before going to Cuba...I dreamed of barren trees in uncultivated and forlorn places...while in Cuba. I dreamed of being in battle...2 or 3 weeks ago, I dreamed of being taken prisoner by the rebs, dreamed it was cavalry...whether it will prove true remains to be seen...well about the Cuba affair...perhaps you would like to know why I failed...it was because of that Englishman...success might have attended my voyage had he not been with me...when we started from N. York...I had one object...and that his reasons...was to go in a slaver, but when he and me arrived there he...considered himself my guest...which I did not relish...the suspicious and conniving coward got others to look out for him & me. We had one jaunt in the country...for I did not dare...let him know that his presence was not agreeable nor did I go to the spot...went in half a mile of it. He got tired and discouraged of the hunt and so we went to Matanzas...after this he asked me if I yet had any faith in it. I told him yes. He then began to inquire the land marks...he thought he had been correct but I knew better...when I was...aboard a vessel...he got a man to go with him and when he got there he knew no more than the man on the moon...finally his disappointment turned to revenge and he blowed the matter all over town. He said I did not want to tell him the spot. I recon he was right...the superstitious Spaniard watched me as a cat...I could not get a chance...to look unnoticed. I staid even till the Englishmen had to leave in a vessel...but the Spaniard watched me closer...yellow fever had commenced in Havanna. I concluded...to leave...and went to Portland, Me. where I arrived the 5th of Aug. Well , I had supposed the war was near at an end...I was tired of the sea...our injured land...called for help. I enlisted am not sorry. I did one thing more...when you...receive a letter...you will know it...by the way I sign my name. Thus, John F. Turner with the john written letters leaning forward and the F and Turner reversed with a cross between this precaution is because I fear that there is some in my company that is bad enough to forge my name and write to you...". Incredibly, another one of Turner's dreams would become true when he was captured, as a member of the 29th Maine, at the battle of Cedar Creek, Va., on Oct. 19, 1864. Slight toning, else very good to near fine.$250-350
