<hr align=left size=5 width=33% color=#778899><h3 align=center>first professional baseball team</h3>The first openly announced all-salaried baseball team led by player-manager Harry Wright, a cricket professional turned baseball manager toured the country in 1869 after three years as an amateur team. Wright said on occasion, “I’d rather be the president of the Cincinnati Red Stockings than be President of the United States.” Sheet music entitled “The Red Stockings” by Mrs. Hettie Shirley Austin, 10"x13", J.L. Peters, New York, 1869. Three-page polka plus cover (four separate sheets) which features engraved oval portraits of the original team players, including: <b>Harry Wright</b> and his brother <b>George</b>,<b> Sweasy</b>,<b> Allison</b>,<b> Charlie Gould</b>,<b> Fred Waterman</b>,<b> Andy Leonard</b>,<b> Brainard</b>, and <b>McVey</b>. Playing positions are noted beneath portraits. Uneven bottom edge with some paper loss; some soiling, dampstains, and edge nicks with penciled scrawl on page 4. Overall Fair/Good. A failure for its stockholders, the Red Stockings was returned to amateur status in 1870. Nonetheless, this experiment provided the basis for the enduring myth that professional baseball arose from this episode in baseball history. The team however dominated the National Association formed in 1871, the first major league.
