THE NAZIS' EXCUSE FOR KRISTALLNACHT
Rare contemporary news photo, 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" b/w, shows the 17-year-old Polish Jew Herschel Grynszpan manacled and being led from a Paris police station following his murder of Ernst von Rath, Third Secretary of the German Embassy on Nov. 7, 1938. Bears paper caption and ink credit stamp on verso. The murder was committed in anger over Hitler's order that over 12,000 Polish Jews, including Grynszpan's parents, be deported. The day of Rath's death was the fifteenth anniversary of the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 and, inflamed by a speech by Goebbels, Nazi militants launched a massive pogrom against Jewish communities throughout Germany, known to history as Kristallnacht.

Estimate: $150 - 200.
