THE LADIES GUNBOAT OF CHARLESTON BROADSIDE
39. "THE LADIES GUNBOAT OF CHARLESTON" BROADSIDE Exceptionally rare war-date printed broadside, 1p. 6 1/2" x 14", Charleston, ca. 1862, advertising: "A Patriotic Musical festival proposed by some public spirited LADIES OF CHARLESTON in aid of "THE LADIES' GUNBOAT", also setting forth the conductors of the event, the various pieces to be played (including "God Save the South" and "My Maryland"), and setting the location at Hibernian Hall at 7:00 PM with an admission charge of fifty cents. After the famous Monitor-Merrimac battle in Hampton Roads, the Charleston Daily Courier published a story describing how Confederate women in New Orleans had contributed to a fund to pay for the construction of a gunboat. Apparently, ladies in Charleston were impressed, and not to be outdone, commenced contributing to what many began to call the "Ladies' Gunboat". Impressed with their zeal, the Navy Department at Richmond offered to accept their contributions for a new ironclad under construction at Charleston, and accepted the name selected by the ladies: "Palmetto State". Slight toning with some pencil notations on verso affecting nothing, else very good. Sold with a repro. of the Palmetto State, and a lengthy newspaper article describing the ladies' efforts and the vessel they helped construct. $1,000-1,500
