THE HAIR OF HENRY CLAY

Currency:USD Category:Collectibles / Autographs Start Price:150.00 USD Estimated At:300.00 - 400.00 USD
THE HAIR OF HENRY CLAY
HENRY CLAY (1777-1852) American politician, the "Great Pacificator" who supported the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 which sought to avoid a civil war on the issue of states' rights and slavery. A rare lock of Clay's hair, about 25 strands affixed to a period slip reading: "The Hair of the Greatest man that is now living Sept. 29th, 1837 Henry Clay's Hair". Along with a rather cryptic note, in full: "From a lock of Henry Clay's hair inscription read 'Washington May 22, 1840 Mr. Clay's Hair, given Anne E.S.". Very good condition, we leave the bidder to decipher the conflicting provenance! From the Dr. John D. Lattimer collection.

Estimate: $300 - 400.
