THE FOUNDER OF THE MUTTER MUSEUM THANKS THE LADIES ASSOCIATION FOR THEIR GIFTS TO THE WOUNDED
JOHN NEILL (1819-1880) Surgeon-in-Charge of the Broad Street US General Hospital, Philadelphia, Gettysburg Hospital surgeon and founder of the College of Physicians (today's Mutter Museum). Good content A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., "General Hospital, U. S. Army, Broad Street, Philadelphia, Feb. 14, 1862," addressed to the President of the Ladies Association of Philadelphia Miss Catharine W. Hood. In part: "I…express my deep regret that you should have received no acknowledgement of your very handsome donations to the Genl. Hospital in Christian St…allow me to say that whilst I have general charge of all the Hospitals, my immediate object of care is the Broad St. Hospital corner of Cherry…the box and package arrived safely and by your benevolence free of expense. I need not assure you of the great satisfaction and comfort which their contents produced among the sick and wounded soldiers. Do me the favor to say to the Ladies of your Assoc. that I should be most happy to see any of them when in the city at the Broad St. Hospital and see them through the building which contains over 600 beds and is now occupied by 300 sick, wounded soldiers who have recently come from Washington…". Near fine.
