THE CONFEDERATES LAY SIEGE TO WASHINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA IN 1863
A great war-date A.L.S. by Sgt. Sherman P. Cooley [WIA Drewry's Bluff, Va., May 12, 64 & Petersburg, June 18, 64], Co. F, 27th Mass. Vols., 2pp. 8vo., "Washington, No. Carolina, April 14, 63" . In part: "…no doubt you have heard of the attack on Washington…& perhaps that we are taken prisoners…we are all right…but we are completely surrounded by the enemy! The Siege has been carried on sixteen days and as yet very few are wounded. The river is particularly Blockaded but not to prevent our boats coming in. We received reinforcements last night & also ammunition, provisions & forage enough to last some time! We hope to hold the place at all hazards & will do it! The enemy's batteries are within one mile of us! We are all right now…the enemy have commenced firing! Good Bye…The supposition is that an overwhelming force is around us but we do no[t] know its strength…we are heavily fortified and are daily making additional fortifications. The gun boat Commodore Hull has been hit over 100 times and is yet in good fighting order. Gun boats Serese & Eagle have had a few shots but no damage done…they have not 'slaved' the 27th yet. Tell Mother not to worry about us…". With original transmittal cover. Very good.
