Cavalrymen and one of 600 members of the Light Brigade who lost 40% of their men at Balaklava during the Crimean War and immortalized in Tennyson's famous poem: "The Charge of the Light Brigade" Scarce A.L.S. Gurney V.C. one of the Baklava Six Hundred", 1p. 8vo., New York, Nov. 21, 1889, to a boy complying with a request for an autograph and answering the correspondent's question: "...You wish the date of the Battle, It occurred on October 25th., 1854 in the Crimea, a part of Southern Russia...". Usual folds, otherwise very good condition. Together with WILLIAM H. RUSSEL, the London Times correspondent who first reported on the debacle and arguably the world's first war correspondent. Signature with short note ,1p. 8vo., Henley, Oct. 24, 1857 which reads: "W. H. Russell, L.D. late special correspondent of 'The Times' in the Crimea &c...". Mounted to another sheet, a few folds, otherwise very good. Two pieces.
