(THE CAPTURE OF BURGOYNE)
28. (THE CAPTURE OF BURGOYNE) An interesting unsigned Ms. in several unknown hands, 12pp. legal folio, n.d. [ca. 1777] entitled "Proposals for an exchange of General Burgoyne - Ascribed to his excellency William Livingston esq. governor of the state of New Jersey". Apparently a parody written in response to the early (and probably unbelievable) reports of Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga the essay reads in part: "...Should the report of general Burgoyne's having infringed the capitulation, between major general Gates and himself prove to be true, our superiors will doubtless take proper care to prevent his reaping any benefit from it, and should he be detained as a prisoner for his infraction of any of the articles. I would humbly propose to exchange him in such a manner as will at the same time flatter his vanity and redound to the greatest emolument of America. To envice the reasonableness of my proposal I would observe that by the same parity of reason that a general in exchanged for a general. a colonel for a colonel and so on..." But in light of the reality that many Britons held numerous titles and offices simultaneously, the authors take it a step further "...General Burgoyne is the most profitable prisoner we could have taken having more offices or...more titles than any gentleman on this side of the Ganges....The exchange I propose is as follows: 1st. For John Burgoye esquire: Some worthy justice of the peace, magnanimously stolen out of his bed or taken from his farm by a band of ruffians in the uniform of British Soldiers and now probably perishing for hunger & cold in a loathsome Jail in New York 2nd. for John Burgoyne. Lieutenant General...Two majors general. ERD. For John Burgoyne Colonel of the queens regiment of dragoons:...at least three continental colonels of horse. 4th. For John Burgoyne governor of Fort William in North Britain..." In all "according to my plan" Burgoyne was worth "1 esquire, 2 majors general, 3 colonels of light horse 2 governors, 1 member of congress, the admiral of our navy, 1 commander in chief in a separate department and 6 privates..." Later on the tone grows more serious: "...Let us all therefore, of every rank and degree remember our plighted faith and honour to maintain the cause with our lives and hour. Let us inflexibly persevere in prosecuting to a happy period what has been so gloriously begun, and hitherto so prosperously conduced. And let those in more distinguished stations use all their influence and authority to rouse the supine...to animate the wavering; and the draw from his lurking hole, the skulking neutral; who leaving to others, the heat and burden of the day..." More fine content. While we cannot identify the hand or the true author, we believe that because the handwriting changes from time to time, that this may have been written by a group, perhaps at a tavern. It appears that one person began writing, then several pages in became fatigued and someone else would take over. Light chipping to pages, otherwise very good. Certainly worthy of further research. $400-600
