THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN

British Trade Advertisement (11" x 17")
Very Fine+ on Linen
Universal, 1935

This sought-after 11" x 17" UK "Advertiser's Announcement" trade advertisement comes from the May 25, 1935, edition of "Kinematograph Weekly," the British film industry's trade paper. The artwork features a close-up of the Bride (Elsa Lanchester) gazing at the Monster (Boris Karloff), set against a Modernist backdrop of machinery and cogwheels, all enhanced by a dark aquamarine hue. It has been expertly linen-backed for preservation and display and remains in excellent condition, with only minor waviness along the excess linen margin.

The previous film in the series, Frankenstein (1931), was a massive hit for Universal, but director James Whale topped himself with this picture, adding a dark sense of humor to the mix - especially in the person of Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), the effete scientist who encourages Dr. Frankenstein to create a mate for the monster. The result is a neo-gothic masterpiece that many consider the apex of the Universal Monster franchise, one that received even more critical praise than its predecessor.
