THE BLUE ANGEL

Pre-War German (37.5" x 54.5"); Stone Litho, Country-of-Origin
Very Fine on Linen
UFA, 1930

Rarely does a poster surface from this classic German film, much less a country-of-origin poster. This magnificent Pre-War poster is most likely the only surviving copy and is in brilliant condition. It was last seen in another auction in the year 2000.

This stunning, large poster from the first release of the Dietrich classic has been professionally linen-backed without any touch-up or restoration. Small tack holes around the border and some paper loss from the border are present. Visible fold and crossfold wear can be seen. Nonetheless, the poster presents magnificently in its current state.

One of the inarguable classics of German cinema, this film, based on the novel Professor Unrat by Heinrich Mann and directed by Josef von Sternberg for UFA, stars the incandescent Marlene Deitrich as Lola-Lola, a vampish cabaret singer who becomes the obsession of Professor Immanuel Rath (Emil Jannings), an obsession that gradually leads to madness, humiliation, and eventually death. One of the first talking pictures to come out of Germany, The Blue Angel was simultaneously filmed in German and English in recognition of the new technology. A massive hit upon release, the movie instantly shot Dietrich to the heights of international stardom, launching a career that would last for decades.
