(THE BATTLE OF FARMINGTON): A fine manuscript D.S. 2pp. folio, "Head Quarters 25th Regt. La. Vols." May 10, 1862, a Confederate battle report, in which Colonel S.W. Fisk of the 25th Louisiana briefs his superiors on the conduct of his regiment at the Battle of Farmington. In part: "...Head Quarters 25th Regt. La. Vols., May 10, 1862...During yesterday's conflict at Farmington I placed my regiment in line on the right of the 1st Brigade, Ruggle's Division commanded by Genl. Anderson and afterwards advanced. The enemy was speedily dislodged from the wood and valley in front...I found the enemy had retired...to the second woods, leaving knapsacks and guns in considerable numbers...also some of their wounded...Having been in advance during the charge I reformed line & waited...for the other regiments to overtake us and get into position...I have to report two killed and twenty-seven wounded, among the latter Lt. Smith of Co. A and Lieuts. McGovern and Caldwell, Co. D. I desire to call particular attention to the intrepid and noble conduct of the color Sergeant, Samuel A. Burns of C. Co. ...Such men as this, who for the first time under fire not only sustain themselves but encourage others, should be promoted and distinguished by the government...". In addition, the document appears to have been signed in pencil by Gen. DANIEL RUGGLES, but we cannot say for certain that this is the case. Usual folds, top margin chipped with no loss of text, otherwise very good and clean. $300-500
