THE ARCHBISHOP OF NEW YORK LOBBIES FOR A SOLDIER'S COMMISSION
JOHN HUGHES (1797-1864) Irish-born Archbishop of New York serving between 1842 and 1864. Archive of five signed letters, 10pp. total, variously 8vo. or 4to, 1857 - 1860, to Mrs. M. Susan Lay of Washington, D.C. as regards her son, Richard, who sought a commission in the U. S. Army. Hughes plans a visit to Washington and promises to contact President Buchanan on Lay's behalf. Included are copies of letters to Senators Douglas and Seward urging their support for the Senate's confirmation of young Lay's appointment. Though a civilian, Richard Lay indeed secured a 2nd lieutenant's commission before the Civil War and served until 1870. Included are two postal covers pertaining to this correspondence. Good to very good.

Estimate: $150 - 200.
