Rare broadside concerning the secession of the State of Texas, 1p. 5 1/4"" x 13 1/4"", [Austin, Feb. 4, 1861], headed: ""Address of Genl. J. W. A. Sanford, Commissioner of Georgia, Before the Texan Convention, 4th. Feb. 1861, [to] Mr. President and Gentlemen of the [Secession] Conventionà"", largely a fiery speech for the Southern cause and secession and against Northern intervention. In small part: ""àThe State of Georgia has specially deputed me to announceàthat she has, in the exercise of her sovereignty, formally and solemnly abrogated and annulled the ordinance by which she became a member of the Federal Unionàher Northern Confederates have pretermitted no opportunity of annoying her upon the subject of negro slaveryà[and have] proclaimed their determination of waging an unceasing warfare against its further extensionà[Georgia] has not hesitated to pronounce for freedom and independenceàGeorgia stands not solitary and aloneàone and yet another [stater] will continue to followàwe have in vain tried to save [the Constitution] from the sacrilkigious hands of the ruthless despoileràThe hearts of Southern mothers and Southern fathersàhave followed you to this distant landàall will live again under the same form of government, and be protected by its strong armàhappier in the form and administration of their government, than any nationà"" On Feb. 23, 1861 a referendum was held throwing the decision of whether or not to secede to the state's voters. The electorate approved secession by a vote of 46,153 for and 14,747 against. As a footnote, 6,777 Texas soldiers died during the Civil War. A rare broadside, with only one other example extant. 2352
