TEXAS PRESENTATION HENRY MODEL 1860 LEVER ACTION RIFLE
TEXAS PRESENTATION HENRY MODEL 1860 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44RF Henry. Standard Henry rifle with 24” oct bbl and integral magazine tube. It has a replacement silver blade front sight and 900 yard ladder rear sight. The stock is nicely figured, dark, oil stained walnut. The receiver is period engraved with the inscription on the left sideplate “J. Jack Wimberly/Capt. 5th Texas Calv” sic). The right sideplate is inscribed with a five-pointed star with the letters for “Texas” in each of the points, with “5th” in the center. The rest of the receiver and sideplates have about 40% coverage arabesque patterns with punch dot background. Left side of bbl and butt stock are fitted with original sling loops. It is accompanied by excerpts from a diary reportedly maintained by a member of Terry’s Rangers, who was hanged as a spy. He reportedly had been a member of Co D and was captured with the diary in his pocket, which was used as evidence to convict him. One of the entries dated Sunday the 8th year not indicated) mentions that Dodd and someone else named Jim “came on to Captain Wimberlys staid sic) all night”. SN 1979. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl retains no original finish being a clean gray metal color with some light rust spotting. The stock appears to be a replacement as it is un-numbered and the buttplate is numbered to another rifle. It is sound and retains most of an old refinish. Bbl and lever have the appearance of metal which has gone through a fire, which would explain the replaced stock. The bolt is heavily rusted. The receiver and buttplate have been cleaned in the past and are now beginning to patinate. The magazine spring appears to be a replacement. Strong dark bore with moderate pitting. 4-49207 JR30
