A.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Rapide Parish, La., Sept. 14, 1823, written when asked to give a written statement in answer to several questions to the court concerning a slave named Miles, sold by a Mr. Cotton to a Mr. Mills without informing him that he was a runaway, in part: "...I know H.C. Mills, John and James Cotton ... I know the negro man Miles ... this boy Miles, some time after having purchased by Mr. Mills, ran away from Mr. Mills and came to Mr. John Cotton and Myself ...We were then at the house of Mr. Barrow ...Cotton...stated that Boy Miles was or had been addicted to the principles of running away, otherwise he would be a valuable negro...".
