TESLA, NIKOLA
239. NIKOLA TESLA (1856 - 1943) American engineer and inventor who discovered the principle of a rotating magnetic field, invented the Tesla Coil and with Edison developed electric lighting. A fine collection of letters from the personal files of inventor Noah S. Amstutz, including three letters from Tesla to Amstutz. Amstutz was at the time promoting his "electro-artograph", a wireless transmitter and receiver allowing printing of text and images sent between two points, not unlike the modern fax machine. Tesla's letters are all on his personal letterhead, each 1p. 4to., from New York. They read, in part: "...[July 11, 1894]...I am in receipt of your sample of telegraphed photo...The result is interesting, but there is much room for improvement left. I hope that you will succeed in mastering the difficulties...[July 25, 1894]...The identical experiment which you illustrate was performed by Messrs. Spottiswood, Gordon and others a very long time ago, and the same observation was made in regard to the properties of the current when the breaking was rapid. I think that in your experiment the strength of the current was reduced and E.M.F. increased when the wheel was more rapidly rotated. You have probably got in this case less energy through the body...it depends entirely on the electrical constants of the circuits and on the rate of breaking...[Jan. 19, 1895]...Your favor of January 16th with print executed upon your Artograph, has been duly received...I appreciate very much your kind attention in sending me the first print, which I will carefully preserve, because it appears to me remarkable. I hope that you are succeeding well, and that you will reap the benefits which your efforts evidently deserve...". Also included are four letters secretarially-signed for Thomas Edison, one stating: "...I have retired from the Electrical Field and have gone into other paths...". With ten additional letters from various companies and individuals, all related to the "artograph". Fine condition.$4,000-5,000
