TAYLOR, ZACHARY
(1784 - 1850) Twelfth President of the United States, ""Old Rough and Ready"" was also a hero of the Mexican War, taking Monterrey and defeating Santa Anna. Fine, important content late L.S. as President, 1p. 4to., Washington, Nov. 8, 1849, to S. B. Halliday in Rhode Island, regarding the designation of Thanksgiving as a national holiday. In part: ""...Your communication of Octo. 27th, in relation to a proclamation for a day of National Thanksgiving, was duly received, and...has been considered with the attention which its importance demands while writing cordially in the feeling of Thankfulness to God for his manifold blessings, and especially for the abasement of the pestilence which so lately walked in our midst, I have yet thought it most proper to have the subject of a Thanksgiving proclamation where custom in many parts of the country has so long consigned it...This decision has been strengthened by the consideration that this is the season usually set apart for that purpose...several of the Governors have already issued their annual proclamations accordingly..."". George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, although some were opposed to it. There was discord among the colonies, many feeling the hardships of a few Pilgrims did not warrant a national holiday. And later, President Thomas Jefferson scoffed at the idea of having a day of thanksgiving. It was Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, whose efforts eventually led to what we recognize as Thanksgiving. After a 40-year campaign of writing editorials and letters to governors and presidents, Hale's obsession became a reality when, in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving. A few tiny marginal chips, else very good.
