Simon studied John Ruskin`s (1818 - 1900) ideas and work with great interest. This famous art and aesthetic theoretician and philosopher initiated a revival movement of craftsmanship and fine art in the 19th century. As a member of Pre-Raphaelites he stressed instincts and invention of a creative personality against superficial and empty academic stereotypes. This portrait belongs among the artist's first graphics, which have been preserved only in a few copies.
