The earliest known type from the Silk Route in China, these are from Red Clay and only found in a few tombs in and around Dunhuang. Many later ones exist, usually in Grey clay and of a completely different design. This earliest type is almost 2" tall by 1-5/8" and far better detailed than any others seen from the Tang. One small edge chip at the bottom otherwise perfect. Circa 8th C. AD.
