(1754 - 1835) American Revolution Colonel who had custody of Major Andre until his execution, and walked with Andre to the scaffold. A.L.S. 7pp. 4to., Washington, Apr. 12, 1812 to former comrade-in-arms Joshua Huntington (son of Gen. Jabez Huntington) in Norwich, Conn. A lengthy letter in which he commiserates with Huntington on the death of his daughter, offering numerous prayers and reassurance and reads in part: "...The Circumstances attending this removal have been so merciful & gracious, that we have felt [illeg.] to make our acknowledgements to the Great author & Finisher of our faith -- We hope we shall not excite a single pang in your afflicted bosoms, but that it may be viewed as we really intended it, a Token of our friendship & Love..." Also signed by Tallmadge's wife MARIA TALLMADGE. Usual folds, a few marginal chips, otherwise very good condition.
