T4 $50 1861. Serial number 1307 is not only a new serial number for the census, it may just have the most interesting life of the approximately 150 examples enumerated from an original issue of 1,606 notes. After this issue reached the then Confederate capital of Montgomery, we know according to Confederate records that this note was signed by Alex B. Clitherall and E.C. Elmore on May 22, 1861. Thereafter, its war service is written on the back of the note. The first few written lines concern the note's life in New Orleans in the summer of 1861 with accompanying endorsements. Then we have the following statement, "This bill was taken from Gen. Magruder's headquarters after his defeat at Williamsburg, Va May 5, 1862 by Charles E. Buell? Company E 18th Mass. Vol. Oct. 18th 1869." Overall, this is an appealing note for the grade with a nice green overprint and fully legible signatures. This $50 is probably the same as it was on the day it was liberated from General Magruder's encampment. Edge furling, nicks, and tears, with the longest tear being approximately a half inch long at bottom center are its circulation wounds. Nonetheless, a historic and important note that has just recently surfaced within the numismatic community. Very Good.
