T Roosevelt at San Juan Hill: Reverse-on-Glass
Theodore Roosevelt at San Juan Hill: A Colorful Reverse-on-Glass Folk Art Painting Depicting Intermingled Rough Riders and Black Buffalo Soldiers in Battle. A remarkable large, naïve artwork (32” x 25” in original frame), quite possibly by an African-American folk artist. Depicts Roosevelt on horseback among a melee of Rough Riders, Buffalo Soldiers, and Spanish troops in heavy combat. Clearly a period work, it is a remarkably effective depiction of the frantic nature of real battle, much more so than many “sanitized” images of such subjects. While the role of the black troops in the San Juan Hill fighting was widely reported at the time, Roosevelt’s self-promotion and the public adulation of his Rough Riders quickly obscured that reality, and only in the past decade or so have historians re-discovered the important role that the Buffalo Soldiers played in the Cuban campaign of 1898. This period work depicts the fighting as it actually took place.

Condition of the painting is basically very nice. There are several minor areas of flaking which could be easily in-painted if one felt the need. A truly unique work, with great historical and folk art appeal.

Shipping: Framed - with Glass, Large (view shipping information)
