Theodore Roosevelt and Booker T. Washington: A Rare Large-Size 1¾" "Equality" Button. One of the most famous political buttons. There are several varieties, all of which are rare, and this is the largest size. The first version, released at the same time as a small poster of similar design, was issued in a positive vein. It featured Booker T. Washington with clearly recognizable facial features, and was meant to celebrate the occasion when T.R. invited Washington to dine at the White House, making him the first African-American to be so honored. Subsequent "knock-off" versions featured a generic black image, and are thought to perhaps have been of a negative nature, criticizing Roosevelt for having an African-American dinner guest in the president's house. There are probably fewer than ten examples known of this largest variety and the condition is beautiful.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
