T. LUX FEININGER (American, b. 1910) MAX BILL AT THE BAUHAUS signed "photo Lux Feininger" in black ink on verso numerical notations on verso vintage gelatin silver print 31/4 x 43/8 in. (8.3 x 11.1 cm) circa 1928 ESTIMATE: $3,000-5,000 PROVENANCE The Estate of Herbert Bayer, AUSTRIA T. Lux Feininger, son of Lyonel Feininger and brother of Andreas Feininger, studied at the Bauhaus building in Dessau for six years, beginning in 1926. His photographs as a teenager convey a playful nature, distinct from his schoolmates, who rarely strayed from their academic seriousness. "In the shots by the teenage T. Lux Feininger, you have the sense that the Bauhaus was a giant playground and the students were just children" (New York College Times, June 22, 2001). This portrait displays such a playfulness by depicting his fellow student, Max Bill, with is head thrown back, in the midst of a forceful laugh. Max Bill (1908-1994) was at this time a student, training for his successful career as an architect, sculptor, painter and graphic artist. He developed the style Concrete Art, a term coined by Theo van Doesburg, which was principled in the economic use of materials and rationality. Max Bill was an extremely influential figure. He was obsessed with the purity of solid forms and the elimination of freehand, intuitive gesture. Therefore it is ironic that Max Bill is captured here in an uncontrollable laugh.
