T. LUX FEININGER (American, b. 1910) LYONEL FEININGER AND THE SAILBOAT signed "photo Lux Feininger" in black ink on verso numerical notations on verso vintage gelatin silver print 37/8 x 31/8 in. (9.8 x 7.9 cm) circa 1928 ESTIMATE: $8,000-12,000 PROVENANCE The Estate of Herbert Bayer, AUSTRIA T. Lux Feininger took this beautifully composed photograph of his father, Lyonel. This father and son shared many artistic interests, but sailing was a common infatuation completely separate from their artistic pursuits. T. Lux captures his father from below, holding an expertly crafted model sailboat above his head, perhaps assembled by father and son together. Lyonel holds the revered object in the air against the sky, pointing it upwards, rather than setting it down in the water. The sailboat is the central focus of the image, with Lyonel placed in the very corner. Due to its strong design qualities, this composition reveals T. Lux's long term training at the Bauhaus.
