The City is a fantastic drawing by renowned illustrator Gene Szafran. It shows several portraits of men and woman on a background of ochre. They are dressed in fabulous clothing. A Rolls Royce and a cathedral are also shown. This could possibly have been a prototype for one of Szafran?s beloved book jackets. The work is double matte din a top mat of charcoal gray with a bottom mat of gold. The frame is an exquisite gold wood frame with a beaded edge. Total size is 16 x 22 inches. Born in Detroit Michigan, Gene Szafran became a noted illustrator for magazines including "Playboy," "Cosmopolitan," "Penthouse," "McCall's," "Fortune," and Bantam Books. He studied and later taught at the art school of the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit and also taught at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He then moved to Connecticut as a freelance artist and worked as an illustrator out of New York City. He has personal interests of photography and sculpture that he often incorporates into his illustrations. Recently he has struggled with Multiple Sclerosis.
