The Sun is a wonderful work by Gene Szafran. It shows a fun bright sun filling up the sky with a beautiful young couple standing in front of it. Szafran uses mixed media in this peice to bring color and depth to the composition. It is framed in a wonderful pink and yellow wood frame that matches the color of the work perfectly. This is a very surrealist/psychedelic style work. Total size is 21 1/2 x 31 1/2 inches.Born in Detroit Michigan, Gene Szafran became a noted illustrator for magazines including "Playboy," "Cosmopolitan," "Penthouse," "McCall's," "Fortune," and Bantam Books. He was responsible for illustrating many science fiction book covers in the 1960's. He studied and later taught at the art school of the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit and also taught at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He then moved to Connecticut as a freelance artist and worked as an illustrator out of New York City. He has personal interests of photography and sculpture that he often incorporates into his illustrations. Recently he has struggled with Multiple Sclerosis.
