It depicts a goat headed figured surrounded by washes of color. The symbol for modern medicince (two snakes entwined around a staff) is below him. The art is signed on the right side. It is framed in a beautiful black wood frame thta has light accents on primrose. It is also double matted with a top mat of black and a bottom mat of pink to accent the colors within the work. It is a wonderful work. The total size is 23 x 23 inches. Born in Detroit Michigan, Gene Szafran became a noted illustrator for magazines including "Playboy," "Cosmopolitan," "Penthouse," "McCall's," "Fortune," and Bantam Books. He was responsible for illustrating many science fiction book covers in the 1960's. He studied and later taught at the art school of the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit and also taught at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He then moved to Connecticut as a freelance artist and worked as an illustrator out of New York City. He has personal interests of photography and sculpture that he often incorporates into his illustrations. Recently he has struggled with Multiple Sclerosis.
