Sydney J. Yard
Sydney J. Yard; San Francisco, CA 1855 - 1909; Sunset, Santa Cruz; watercolor on paper; 9 1/2 x 15 inches; signed lower right; dated 1894; Sydney J. Yard was an important watercolor painter in San Francisco and Carmel from the late 1890's until his early death in 1909. Early in his career as an artist, Yard abandoned oil painting for watecolor, finding himself drawn to "that delicate, transparent medium". He was one of very few turn-of-the-century painters to be able to support himself solely through his painting. Yard worked both in the tonalist aesthetic espoused by such painters ad Francis McComas and in the brighter impressionist mode. This work captures the restful harmony implicit in a typical California sunset through fog. Over the door of his house in Carmel, Yard posted a quote from Constable: "Art is a corner of nature seen through a temperament" (above quotes from S.F. Call, April 29, 1907)
