DOCUMENT CREATING ADMIRAL SIR DAVID MILNE A FREE BURGESS OF THE BOROUGH OF BERWICK-UPON-TWEED, 28th OCTOBER 1816. Handwritten in ink on vellum, 17"x18" (43 x 46cm), and bearing the impression of the Borough Seal in red wax upon a length of 2" (5cm) wide gold lace, this enfranchisement of Milne as a Free Burgess of Berwick-upon-Tweed recounts "the Honor and great Respect" in which the Mayor, Bailiffs and Burgesses of the Borough held Milne "for the Gallantry and Zeal displayed by him as Second in Command in the late glorious Victory over the Dey of Algiers which was the happy means of putting a final Period to Christian Slavery". Some passages of the text bear later underlining in pencil. DOCUMENT ("BURGESS TICKET") CREATING DAVID MILNE A BURGESS AND FREEMAN OF THE BURGH OF MUSSELBURGH, 29TH SEPTEMBER 1786. Handwritten in ink on vellum, 5"x 5 3/4"(13 x 14.5cm), and bearing the remains of an impression of the burgh seal in black wax pendant from a length of narrow scarlet cotton ribbon, this enfranchisement of Milne as a burgess and freeman of his mother's home burgh notes his "right to the whole privilidges libertys & immunitys thereto belonging". DOCUMENT ("BURGESS TICKET") CREATING CAPTAIN DAVID MILNE, R.N., A BURGESS & GUILDBROTHER OF THE CITY OF EDINBURGH, 5TH SEPTEMBER 1798. Handwritten in ink on heavy cream laid paper, backed with a white paper wrapper with navy blue edges, the whole 11 1/4"x15 1/2" (28.5 x 39.5cm). Bearing an impression of the seal of Edinburgh in red wax pendant from narrow black and white silk ribbons, the seal impression enclosed within a circular tin box, this "Burgess Ticket" notes that, "In Testimony of the high sense they entertain of the eminent Services rendered to his King and Country, as well as of their own personal regard and esteem" the Lord Provost, Bailies and others admit Milne to be a Burgess and Guildbrother. This "Ticket" has an attached tissue paper protecting its surface and is enclosed in a painted tin box bearing the Arms of the City of Edinburgh in paint on its lid. Sir David Milne was a Deputy-Lieutenant for the County of Berwickshire at some point in his life, although the exact date of his appointment is not known. The dates ascribed to the sword are those of the period between which the retailers began trading under that name and at those addresses (1839) and the death of Sir David Milne (1845). These burgess tickets entitled Milne to vote in elections within the Borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Musselburgh and Edinburgh. He briefly represented Berwick-upon-Tweed as its Member of Parliament in 1820. By September 1798, Milne's exploits in capturing the French ships La Pique in 1795, Lacedemonian in 1796 and La Seine in July 1798 were probably the talk of Edinburgh; the City's admission of Milne to be a Burgess and Guildbrother was probably directly in reflection of the capture of La Seine.
