c1870-1890-Henry Begeulin was a noted watchmaker from Locle, a town in Switzerland near Neuchatel. He was known to produce watches from the mid-to-late 1800s. This particular watch is a Henry Begeulin mechanism, gold plated Geneva style, in an 18k gold hunter case. The case bears ornate floral engravings, and a signet on front without any engraved initials. The dial is a single-sunk white enamel with black roman numerals in the outer chapter ring. The seconds dial is marked in black Arabic numerals in 10 second intervals. The hour and minute hands are mismatched--one an open tulip and the other a fleur-de-lis variant. The seconds hand features a partial fleur-de-lis on the end. All blued. The inner case is marked "Warranted/ 18/ carat fine/ E.T.D./ 18". Key wind, key set. The rear case is marked "Warranted/ 18/ carat fine/ E.T.D./ 35618". Please note that the serial number on the case matches that of the mechanism. The cuvet is marked "No. 35618/ Patent Lever/ Full Jeweled/ Henry Begeulin/ Locle". Between the 1870-1880s, "full jeweled" meant 15 jewels. The mechanism itself is a gold-plated Geneva style, which is a finer mechanism style from the Swiss market, and bears no maker`s marks or model information--typical of a Begeulin watch. This watch still runs beautifully This lot also includes a 23" gold chain, marked "1-10-14k Gold Filled" and a key for the set / wind mechanisms. The key is marked "5" and appears to have glue on one side of the gilt handle. The chain weighs 0.18 troy ounces. HKA#64356
