The Model 1851 was the first military rifle in Europe to depart from the large 18mm lead ball in favor of the 10.4mm (cal .41) round. This meant that soldiers could carry almost twice as many rounds. This example of a Model 1851 rifle has a casehardened lock plate marked with a crown/BF proof and "BEURET FRERES / LIEGE". The tangs and bolster are also casehardened. Blade front and elevation adjustable notch rear sight, with a bayonet lug on right barrel side and double set triggers. Smooth straight grip stock with Swiss style buttplate, sling swivels, three barrel bands, and iron ramrod with button style head. A "crown/BF" proof is also present on the stock, buttplate, and barrel bands, with "JP" stamped behind the lower tang.
