Print size 8 1/2 inches wide by 12 1/2 inches high. Artist signed.<p> William Gropper grew up poor on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Both parents worked hard for the little they had. His mother toiled as a sweatshop seamstress. Gropper's chance to escape tenement life came when his sidewalk chalk drawings were noticed and he was invited to study art at the Ferrer School. His teachers were Ashcan artists Robert Henri and George Bellows. They provided an untraditional education. Another famous pupil, Stuart Davis, explained students were taught, "Art was not a matter of rules and techniques, or the search for an ideal beauty - it was the expression of ideas and emotions about the life of the time.
