Sutherland Sisters Photo Group
The Seven Sutherland Sisters Group Photo and Mary Sutherland Cabinet Card. The Sutherland sisters were a group of traveling performers and salespersons whose hair had a combined length of 37 feet. The group started out as a vocal and instrumental group, appearing in such shows as Barnum and Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth. When their amazing plaited locks became more of a spectacle than their singing, the group decided to market a hair-growing product made of various vegetable oils and minerals. Over the years the sisters amassed over 2 million dollars in profits. The seven sisters squandered their wealth on an opulent lifestyle that included personal maids to comb their famous hair. This lot features two cabinet cards, one depicting all seven sisters (including Naomi who died young and was "replaced" by a stand-in). This photo features all seven sisters, some seated, some standing but all showing their impressive locks. The photo measures 6.5" x 4.25" (slightly shorter than their hair) and the back of the photo has a record of each sisters name and length of her hair. The photo is in excellent condition with just some slight soiling on the front.

The second photo is of Mary Sutherland, whose hair measured 6 feet long (according to the back of the group shot!). It is said that Mary was insane due to the heavy weight of her hair. Some believed that too much hair would rob the brain of nourishment and blood flow. This photo measures 4" x 7" and has Mary's name in gilt embossment on the bottom. It is a lovely picture of her displaying all of her hair which was said to fully envelope her when she spun it around. In near mint condition with just some slight soiling on both sides. A fascinating group of women.

Important notice:</
