American, ca 1860-1880. A Vernier surveyor's compass by W. & L.E. Gurley, Troy, N.Y., of brass with silvered 5" diameter dial, fleur-de-lis at North; East and West points reversed, blued-steel needle with brass hub clamp, needle-ring divided 0-90º with individual degree divisions extending to inner rim, shaped limb with Vernier, tangent-screw, clamp and outkeeper at South, two leveling vials at North and South, baluster-form mount with ball-and-socket tripod adaptor, twin screw-on-sights. 12.5" long x 9.5" high (to top of sights).

Condition: Tarnish and wear from use.
