Fifth chief justice of the Supreme Court, he handed down the Dred Scott decision and upheld federal supremacy over state authorities (1777–1864). Partly-printed DS, signed “R. B. Taney,” one page, 8 x 4.5, February 21, 1814. Document ordering the sheriff of Frederick County, Maryland, to take Frederick Stumbel “to answer unto James Bosley and Francis McAtea in a plea of trespass.” Signed at the bottom by Taney. A central horizontal fold, small chip to lower right corner, and some light toning, otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA.
