ALS signed “Louis D. Brandeis,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Supreme Court letterhead, July 20, 1930. Letter to Zionist leader Henrietta Szold, discussing the improving health conditions of the Degania cooperatives which he had visited in 1919. In part: “I know how the malaria was banished. I should like to know, with all available accuracy, how prosperous they are now;—and what, from year to year, since the malaria control became effective, their advance from wretchedness to, or toward, prosperity has been. In this connection, I should like to have, among other things, the statistics, and in these should be included the indebtedness of the colonies to the P. Z. E. (or other Zionist body) at the close of each year; and the figures showing whether any payment was made on account of the principal indebtedness or the interest during the year. I note on p. 85 of 'The Seventh Dominion' that Daganiah A was said to be paying interest charges. May I trouble you to send me this information as soon as possible?” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and a small area of tape-reinforced paper loss to the bottom edge. An exceptional piece of correspondence between these historically important figures.
