Associate Justice of the Supreme Court who favored expanding federal power. He wrote many legal treatises, including Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States, The Conflict of Laws, and Law of Partnership. ALS, one page, 8 x 9.75, July 10, 1830. Letter to newly appointed Associate Justice John McLean. In full: “My friend, Mr. Timothy Walker of the Law Institution in this place is now about to visit the Western states, partly with a view to settlement, if the prospect should be inviting. He is a graduate of Harvard University and is distinguished by his high talents, literary attainments and devotion to legal pursuits. I cannot doubt that he will achieve great eminence in the profession. His private character is of the very first order in all respects. If he should have the good fortune to meet you, I shall esteem it a personal favour if you will aid his inquiries & promote his objects as far as you can without inconvenience.” Second integral page bears an address panel in another hand In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and some mild soiling.
