Statesman (1739–1800), who served as the first governor of South Carolina following the signing of the United States Constitution, and was the second chief justice of the Supreme Court. Revolutionary War–dated handwritten endorsement, signed “J. Rutledge,” on a one-page partial manuscript document, 8 x 2.25, dated April 14, 1779. Rutledge writes, “Lieut. Col Senf is promoted to the rank of Colonel in the service of this state. J. Rutledge, April 14, 1779.” Reverse bears Senf’s oath to “support…the laws and Constitution of this State, and of the United States.” In very good condition, with tape reinforcement to reverse of central vertical fold, scattered toning and dampstaining, and Rutledge’s writing and signature a shade or two light, but still completely legible.
